Rank is relative to a particular group
Rank 10 of 20 places a student halfway through a cohort. Rank 10 of 180 places a student much closer to the top. Even when cohort sizes match, the academic distribution and the gaps between students can be different.
Moderation adds school course context
NESA moderates school assessment marks using the HSC exam performance of each school course group. It keeps the submitted rank order and reflects the relative gaps between assessment marks, while adjusting the scale so results can be compared across schools.
This is why a rank cannot be converted through one statewide lookup table. The school, course, year, cohort and eventual exam performance all matter.
How to compare ranks more honestly
Use rank together with cohort size and multiple years of school course outcomes. Treat historical results as context, not destiny. A current cohort can be stronger or weaker, and your own exam rank can move away from your internal rank.
